Australian Nick Kyrgios, Argentine Juan Martín del Potro, Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Portuguese João Sousa are the headlines of this third edition.
Gastão Elias wins a wild card and guarantees his participation in the only Portuguese event included in the official ATP World Tour schedule. The tournament takes place between April 29 and May 7, at the Clube de Ténis do Estoril.
João Zilhão, the director of the tournament, considered – this Thursday at the press conference that officially presented the event – that the Estoril Open 2017 presents the strongest participant’s list of the three editions, stating that “some of the most charismatic tennis players in the world will be compete in Portugal. A world-class “stars” poster featuring Australian Nick Kyrgios, Juan Martín del Potro, Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Portuguese João Sousa.” he said.
The best Portuguese tennis player of all time who cannot attend the press conference because it coincided with the date of his birthday, left to the audience his video testimony: “This tournament is very important for any Portuguese player and once again I am very motivated to do my best,“he revealed.
The director of the tournament said that despite the great players who will pass through the Clube de Ténis do Estoril: “Both Del Potro and Kyrgios are two potential winners. We cannot forget Carreño-Busta. Gasquet is always a danger. But our dream is to see João Sousa as the winner, “he confessed
João Zilhão also explained that the priority in the allocation of wild cards – the first was given today to Gastão Elias, number two national – will be the Portuguese tennis players: “There is only exception when there is a request for an international player which has such a dimension that this translates into a media projection for the tournament. We have some interesting names. Let’s look. There are 29 days remaining for the tournament. Soon we will announce the second ‘wild card’ and we will keep the third for the days before the tournament, “he added.
The news of this third edition also go through more cultural events during the week of the Millennium Estoril Open.
The renovated Casa Sommer, in Cascais, will receive a display of documents and objects from the beginnings of Portuguese tennis, which includes the royal racket of King D. Carlos I. Major national and international artists such as Joana Vasconcelos will also exhibit their works during the tournament.
The bet also goes through the fun at the local of the tournament, with more live music, jazz, fado, djs and so on. There will be more activities aimed at children, one of the main audiences of the tournament.
